Hunger Ministries are those Outreach Programs that serve the needy in the local area by providing food and other necessities.
F.A.C.E.T.S. (Fairfax Area Christian Emergency and Transitional Services, Inc.): Volunteers provide hot meals to the homeless, with Floris UMC preparing and delivering dinners one day each month to families and individuals at several motels along Routes 50 and 29 in Fairfax. Temporary housing is provided at these motels. Volunteers buy groceries, cook and package dinners and deliver them on the first Tuesday of each month. For further information about F.A.C.E.T.S. visit http://www.facetscares.org.
Give a Meal a Month: Volunteers purchase and bag grocery items from a specific menu plan and drop them at the church the first Sunday of each month. Meals are delivered to the Shepherd Center, which is operated by Western Fairfax Christian Ministries. For more information visit http://www.wfcmva.org.
Gleaning: Volunteers go into the fields to glean fruits or vegetables that are being donated by a local orchard owner or farmer. Produce is gathered in bags and then distributed to area shelters, food banks, church food pantries, low-income neighborhoods, soup kitchens and public housing facilities for the elderly. All ages can assist in this opportunity to serve. Gleaning requires about two hours of work plus travel time to an orchard or farm.
Meals on Wheels: Volunteer drivers pick up hot lunches and bag dinners at Cameron Glen Care Center in Reston and deliver them to area residents who are disabled or disadvantaged. Floris provides volunteer drivers Monday through Friday during the Christmas season.
S.O.M.E. (So Others Might Eat): Volunteers (about 5 per month) prepare and serve breakfast to poor, homeless, and the elderly at a site in Washington, D.C. The coordinator orders food and coordinates volunteers each month. Volunteers meet at the church at 5:30 a.m. and return to the church by about 9:30 a.m. on the third Saturday of each month. S.O.M.E. is located at 71 O Street, N.W. in Washington, D.C. For more information visit http://www.some.org.
