Opportunities to Serve Our Local Community

Advent Giving Team Member - Help with planning and coordination of giving during the Advent season. 1-2 hours a week during November and December.
All God's Children Camp Volunteer - Help with collection and delivery of camping items to children of incarcerated parents. 2-3 hours, once a year.
Angel Tree Volunteer - Help with phone calls, gift collection and gift delivery to children of incarcerated parents. 2-3 hours, once a year (Novem ber/December).
Bus Driver for Grace Ministries - Provide transportation to and from church building for Grace Ministry clients the first Saturday of the month. 3 hours.
Bus Driver for Latino Ministry - Provide transportation to and from church building for Latino Ministry on Saturday evenings. 1-2 hours.
Bus Driver for Older Adults - Provide transportation to and from church for residents of local senior living facilities. Before and after the 11:00 am Sunday service.
The Closet Volunteer - Help process inventory, work cash register at local thrift shop in downtown Herndon. 4-6 Hours once a month.
The Closet - Haul recyclables (e.g., cardboard) from this downtown Herndon thrift shop to a recycling center. Opportunities to help one or several times a week.
The Closet - Repair picture frames for this downtown Herndon thrift shop. Work at your own pace, on your own schedule. Work at the thrift shop or in your home.
The Closet - Polish silver items for this downtown Herndon thrift shop. Work at your own pace, on your own schedule. Work at the thrift shop or in your home.
The Closet - Donate clothing to this downtown Herndon thrift shop any Thursday or Saturday between the hours of 8 am and 2 pm.
Chocolate Festival Planning Team Member - Be part of team that plans and implements annual chocolate festival. 4-5 hours a month, November through February.
Chocolate Festival Volunteer - Help with set-up, chocolate sales, children's games, refreshment service or clean-up. 2-3 hours on day of event (February).
Easter Baskets Volunteer - Help with tagging, sorting, and distribution of Easter Baskets to underprivileged children. 1-2 hours in early Spring.
ESL Admin - Assist English as a Second Language (ESL) Coordinator by buying supplies and contacting substitutes. 1 hour a week.
ESL Teacher - Teach English as Second Language (ESL). 2 hours a week in the evening.
ESL Substitute Teacher - Subsitute for an ESL teacher. As needed for 2 hours in the evening.
FACETS Volunteer - Help prepare and/or deliver food for Fairfax Area Christian Emergency and Transitional Services (FACETS). First Tuesday of the month; later afternoon and/or early evening.
Just Neighbors Clinic Volunteer - Help with check-in, make copies, organize and file paperwork, or be a translator. 2-3 hours on a Saturday morning.
Give a Meal a Month Volunteer - Take donated food to food pantry. 45 minutes once a month.
Glean Food for the Hungry - Pick produce (fruits and vegetables) that are delivered to homeless shelters and soup kitchens. Volunteer one or more times each year, for 4-5 hours. All ages welcome.
Grace Ministries Distribution Volunteer - Help with clothing and food set up and distribution. 3-4 hours first Fri or Sat of the month.
Grace Ministries Set-Up Volunteer - Help sort clothing and bag food. 2-3 hours first Friday evening of the month.
Grace Ministries Client Support Volunteer - Assist clients (Spanish helpful) with registration. 3 hours on the first Saturday of the month.
Grace Ministries Diaper Team Volunteer - Purchase and organize diapers for distribution. 2-3 hours a month.
Grace Ministries Delivery Volunteer - Pick up donated food from local stores and deliver it to church. 2-3 hours a month.
Grace Ministries Food Team Volunteer - Order and organize food. 2-3 hours a month.
Grace Ministries Knitter/Crocheter - Make blankets and baby caps for clients. Work at your own pace, on your own schedule.
Grace Ministries Grant Proposal Writer - Help write grant proposals. As needed.
Gulf Coast UMVIM Team Member - Travel to US Gulf Coast to rebuild homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina (United Methodist Volunteers in Mission). 8-day trip.
Hearts and Hammers Volunteer - Assist with repairs for elderly who chose to age in place. 2-3 hours as needed.
Helping Children Worldwide Volunteer - Help plan a development strategy for HWC and its programs. 5-7 hours a month.
Hospitality Volunteer - Provide refreshments for Floris events. 1-2 hours quarterly.
Hutchison Classroom Volunteer - Volunteer in the classroom of local elementary school (Hutchison Elementary in Herndon). 1-2 hours every other week.
Hutchison Admin Volunteer - Help with Hutchison Care Project (HCP) administrative tasks. 1-2 hours a month.
Hutchison Assistance Volunteer - Help with meals, transportation and other types of assistancel. 1 hour, twice a year.
Hutchison Clothing Drive & Sale Co-Chair - Serve as a member of the leadership team for this annual event that takes place in October/November. Hours vary.
Hutchison One-time Volunteer - Assist with one-time events (e.g., book fair, bingo night). 2-3 hours per event.
Hutchison Math Mentor - Help an elementary school student with math skills. 1 hour a week.
Hutchison Committee Volunteer - Write monthly article for Floirs Flyer, all info is provided. 30 minutes a month.
Meals on Wheels Driver - Pick up meals and deliver them to area shut-ins. Drive on a weekday from 11:15 to 1:15 in the Herndon/Reston area (on a rotating schedule or at Christmas only).
Neighbors United Homework Tutor - Help with homework after school. Grades 1-8 at Herndon Resource center. 1.5 sessions (1-4 days a week).
North County Hypothermia Project Volunteer - Prepare and serve hot dinners/provide breakfast foods to homeless in Reston. 2 hours once a month, during winter months.
Rebuilding Together Volunteer - Assist with home repair projects. Some repairs require specialized skills, but many do not (e.g., yardwork, painting, hospitality). 6-8 hours on one day a year (usually a Saturday in April).
RISE Volunteer - Help baby sit children in group setting while parents attend life skills training. 1 hour, last Monday of each month.
SOME Volunteer - Prepare hot meals at So Others Might Eat (SOME), a soup kitchen in DC. 4 hours, 3rd Sat of month in the early morning hours.
Spanish Translator/Interpreter - Translate and interpret for Spanish-speaking clients seeking help with immigration legal matters. Thursdays during the day, 1-2 hours month.
United Methodist Women Member - Get involved in local and global social action and mission through the UMW. Become a member of the Floris UMW.
