Hypothermia Program

The North County Hypothermia Prevention Program was initiated 2 winters ago by Reston Interfaith and the help from local community organizations.  The purpose of the program is to prevent weather-induced illness and loss of life among unsheltered homeless adults.  Each year the program has served over 120 men and women who normally do not stay at traditional homeless shelters.  Floris UMC volunteers helped contribute to the success of the program by preparing, serving and contributing food on a weekly basis.

The Hypothermia program will begin its third year on December 1 and will run through March 15, 2009.  Volunteers from Floris UMC may participate in numerous ways:

·         Prepare and/or serve warm home-cooked dinners to the clients at the North Human Services Building in Reston.  FUMC volunteers will be serving meals every Tuesday evening during the program, therefore, you can volunteer for any available Tuesday.

·         Supply nutritious breakfast foods that are easily portable (box juices, muffins, fruit cups, granola bars) as the clients leave by 7:00 a.m. each day.

·         Donate needed items from the Hypothermia Prevention Program wish list by dropping them off in the container on the second floor by the welcome center.
