Behold the Lamb by Yoon Nam

Then John saw Jesus coming toward him, and John said, "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29)

Holy Week gives us special moments to steer our daily routines closer to the cross, and a chance to pause and meditate on the meaning of Holy Week and Easter.

In the early churches, they read the Passion story from one of the Gospels during the Holy Week. Originally, a priest read through the Passion story and in the Middle Ages, they recited it with some musical tones and this eventually developed into Passion oratorios. These usually have a narrator, called the Evangelist, who sings the main Passion story from the Bible, and a chorus that sings as the turba which means " crowd." Additionally there are some special songs sung by soloists to give depth to the Passion story. My favorite Passion oratorio is J. S. Bach's "St. John Passion." I will share more about this specific oratorio in my personal blog sometime soon.

This year our Lenten cantata, "The Seven Last Words of Christ" is similar to the Passion oratorio. However, it is written with the seven words that Jesus said on the cross. We have three soloists; a soprano and tenor who will share meditative songs, and a baritone who will sing as Jesus. The choir will mostly represent the crowd that said, "Crucify him!" We have prayed that we get to be there with Jesus on the Cross and that we are restored by His mercy and grace through His presence.

On Easter morning, the Easter choir and orchestra will lift up, "Behold the Lamb" and the"Hallelujah" chorus as Easter anthems through during all three morning worship services. We will praise the Lamb of God who suffered, died and rose again for our salvation through the song "Behold the Lamb", and proclaim His victory upon the King of kings, the Lord of lords through "Hallelujah." My heart has been pounding faster to experience God's presence throughout the Holy Week and Easter. How about you?

Here are the lyrics to "Behold the Lamb."

Behold the Lamb, slain from the foundation of the world. For sinners crucified, O Holy sacrifice. Behold the Lamb of God, behold the Lamb.

Crown Him! Worthy is the Lamb! Praise Him! Heaven and earth resound!

Behold the Lamb, slain from the foundation of the world. For sinners crucified, O Holy sacrifice. Behold the Lamb of God, behold the Lamb.

Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne; Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own. Awake, my soul, and sing of Him who died for thee, and hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity. Behold the Lamb, the Lamb of God!!
