Today I Saw God
eNote from Rev. Tom Berlin August 30, 2012
Dear Floris Family,
Fall is almost here, and we are busy gearing up for the kickoff of small groups, children and student ministries and exciting fall events. It begins this Sunday with our annual Church Picnic. We will gather at the Frying Pan Park Visitor Center from noon to 3 PM. This is a chance to experience an old fashioned picnic with sack races, games, a pie auction, great food and most of all, a chance to catch up with each other and welcome those who are new to the Floris community. Here are a few reminders:
- Bring a side dish to share – we'll provide grilled hot dogs, chicken and drinks.
- My favorite part of the afternoon will be the pie auction. If you have a favorite pie, bring it to be auctioned off to the highest bidder.
- There are still opportunities to help at the picnic. If you'd like to serve in this way, visit our website. This is a great way to get to know other Floris family members and no one serves more than an hour.
- There will be no 5 PM service after the picnic.
Kid Nation Sunday School and Student Ministries programming all begin on September 9. We are still looking for 4 more Sunday School teachers, which is down from 11 on Sunday. Thanks to everyone who has signed up to help so far and to those who are still praying and considering this important task. Please email Melissa Ciavarella if you would like to volunteer. Adult small groups, including a new Wesley Seminary Speaker Series, are also beginning in September. Check out our website for all Fall Kickoff information.
Healing and Prayer Service
I would like to invite you to our Healing and Prayer Service on Thursday, September 6 at 7:30 PM. This will be a time for personal and corporate prayer. It will include an opportunity to be anointed with oil and will be about 45 minutes in length. This is a chance to pray for yourself or someone you love.
Individual Spiritual Assessment
I'm excited to be able to share with you a new feature on our website. On the Grow Ministry's Adult page you will find an Individual Spiritual Assessment. This tool is designed to help you identify where you are in your spiritual journey and then assist you in making choices that guide your growth. I want to encourage you to take a few minutes to complete the survey. It is our goal for every adult in our congregation to take the survey. While the survey is anonymous, it will give us important information so that we can know what to offer and what will be helpful to you.
This Week in Worship
I am looking forward to the upcoming Stung by the Tonguesermon series, which I think will have high applicability in most of our lives and with our families. This series will explore the power of words and give suggestions for building others up while speaking the truth in love. I hope you will use this as an opportunity to begin a conversation about how we talk to each other in our homes and at work or school. We will look at portions of the Letter of James, and I encourage you to read James as a way of preparing for worship. This week we will learn to "Corner Criticism." Criticism can be hurtful. We will consider how we are called to intentionally encourage rather than carelessly criticize those who are in our lives. Scripture: James 3:7-12.
