Today I Saw God
eNote from Rev. Tom Berlin May 30, 2013
Dear Floris Family,
Some of the best things Floris members are doing happen at their school or place of work. Ryan Crosby, who attends fourth grade at Floris Elementary, is a good example. Several weeks ago I showed a video about the Long brothers who participate in races together. Cayden Long has cerebral palsy. His brother Conner decided it would be great if they could do a triathlon together. The video of the Long brothers' story we saw in worship was also shown in Ryan's classroom by his teacher. Ryan suggested that their class form a team and include their classmate Joey, a young man who has disabilities. Soon class members were training for the race together, getting to know each other, and having fun. That led to the group sitting together at lunch and playing together at recess. Everyone's world got a little wider and better as a result. On the day of the race, the kids decided to let Joey cross the finish line first for their team. I knew you would want to see the video Ryan's class made about their accomplishment. This is a great example of discipleship to Christ in action in our community.
As I mentioned last week, I am at the Child Rescue Centre in Bo, Sierra Leone, with a team from Floris and other CRC partner churches. If you would like to know what the team is doing be sure to read the Floris Blog. You may also read my thoughts and experiences on my blog.
Strategic Objectives Update
Over the past two years eight different teams have been working on eight strategic objectives for our church. A lot of people have spent many hours on everything from discipleship to risk management. These have been important objectives to pursue. They are so important that they have now been placed into the operations of our ministry on an ongoing basis where they will continue to be considered and improved. Read these reportsand see what Floris members and staff have been doing to contribute to our larger ministry. I am grateful to everyone who spent time making these eight objectives come to life.
I ask you to continue to pray for our church to see where God is calling us in the months and years to come as we seek God's guidance on what's next for our church. Remember to provide your insights on the Pray in May page.
Sunday we took up a special offering to help those affected by the devastating tornado in Oklahoma. So far we have collected more than $3,500 to be sent to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Here is an update on how UMCOR is responding to the emergency needs of those in Oklahoma. If you weren't in worship Sunday and would like to help, you can still donate to tornado relief.
Live Streaming Update
Last week we launched Sunday morning live streaming and had 110 hits. We learned of a family who joined us for worship from a loved one's hospital room in another state. It is our hope that this will allow those who are on vacation or unable to attend worship to join us. Visit www.florisumc.org/livestream to participate.
This Week in Worship
Be sure to worship with us this week as we share in Holy Communion. We will also explore the Christian virtue of kindness as we study David's honoring of his friendship with Jonathan. Join us for the sermon, "David's Question". Scripture: 2 Samuel 9:1-13.
