Offer Them Christ

A couple of weeks ago Pew Research released a survey that revealed the percentage of adults who describe themselves as Christians dropped by eight percentage points in just seven years to about 70 percent of the population. Blogs have been alive with conversations around how to respond to this news particularly as it relates to millennials. Pundits ask, "What must the church do?" As a mother of two millennials, I think we are asking the wrong question. It is not about what we must do. It is about what we must be.

I have been reading 1 Corinthians and this morning I came across a quote from Paul in which he says, "I have become all things to all people that I might by all means save some." (1 Cor. 9:22) I think what Paul is saying is that he put others first. He met them where they were, understood their lives and then offered them Christ. He told them the story of an amazing guy named Jesus, who challenged the status quo, called people to love one another and to care for the vulnerable. When Paul met Jesus he was changed forever. I truly believe if people meet Jesus, they will be changed. Therefore the real question is, "Are people getting the opportunity to see Jesusin our churches and in our every day lives?"

Toward the end of his life, John Wesley commissioned Thomas Coke to go to America and ordain Francis Asbury and others into the ministry. Wesley stood at the pier and, as the boat departed for America, said to Coke, "Offer them Christ, Thomas."

That is what I believe needs to be done. We must go and offer them Christ. We must be Christ in the world so that the world will know Christ.
