Are you looking for an organization that accepts donations of food, clothing and/or diapers? Floris UMC accepts donations of these items and distributes them to the needy in and around the Herndon area. Many in our congregation and community contact us about what we can accept and how to get those items to Floris UMC. These FAQs will answer those questions and more.
Q: Where can I donate food?
A: Floris UMC accepts donations of food items on the first Sunday of the month through our Help Hungry Kids program that supports Hutchison Elementary School and McNair Elementary School. Food donated should be nonperishable and within the expiration date. Please follow the instructions on our Help Hungry Kids page.
Q: Can you tell me where to donate diapers?
A: Floris UMC is committed to helping ensure that babies grow up clean, healthy and strong. We accept donations of unopened packs of disposable diapers on the first Friday of each month from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. You can bring them to the upper level of the church and place them in the bins to the left of the sanctuary during these time periods.
Q: I am wondering where to donate clothes and whether I can donate baby clothes.
A: We accept new and gently used clothing that is clean and stain-free. Seasonally appropriate clothing donations are accepted on the first Friday of each month from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the upper level of the church.
Q: Am I able to donate children's books?
A: Yes, Floris UMC accepts donations of gently used children's books for elementary age students. Books must be in excellent condition and can be brought to the church on the first Friday of each month from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the upper level of the church. From late May to early June, Floris UMC collects books for Hutchison Elementary.
Q: Does Floris UMC offer a pickup service for donated goods?
A: Floris UMC cannot currently accommodate picking up donations from your home. We appreciate your willingness to deliver your items to our facility at the designated drop-off times.
Q: Why should I donate my items to Floris UMC?
A: Floris UMC depends on donated items from our congregation and friends in the community to serve the hungry, homeless and poor in and around Herndon. We promise to be good stewards of your gifts by supplying them, at no cost, directly to those who need them most. While there are many organizations ready and willing to accept your donations, we appreciate your partnering with us to bring these items to those in need in our community.
Q: What charitable programs and services do my donated items help support?
A: Goods donated to Floris UMC are distributed to the community through a variety of channels:
- GRACE Ministries: Grace Ministries offers food clothing and diapers to families in need.
- Help Hungry Kids Program: This program serves students at Hutchison and McNair Elementary Schools.
Q: Are my donations tax deductible?
A: All donated goods are tax deductible as allowed by the IRS and state tax code. You may obtain a receipt for tax purposes when you drop off your donations.
Q: Do you accept other kinds of donations, like household items or furniture?
A: Floris UMC is currently unable to accept other sorts of donated goods as part of our ongoing charitable programs. We do sometimes hold special drives to collect relief items when natural disasters or other tragedies strike. You can learn about these efforts by checking our website regularly.
Q: What if I have additional questions?
A: Other questions should be directed to Jake McGlothin at 703-793-0026 x110 or via email. Calls received during our regular office hours are normally returned within 24 hours.
Quick and Easy Donating Steps
In just 5 minutes, you can do something meaningful to help the less fortunate in our community. Here's how...
1. Do (one or more) of the following:
- Ask your kids to choose one or two gently used books that they no longer read
- Grab a pack of unopened diapers from your changing area
- Look through your closet for 5-10 articles of clothing that you haven't worn in the past couple of months
2. Bag up your items and put them by the door or in your car so you'll see them the next time you run an errand.
3. When you're out and about, drop your items by Floris UMC--we're conveniently located at 13600 Frying Pan Rd.
You can also call a friend and ask them to look for items around their house. Bring your items to Floris UMC together, and turn it into a fun group outing.
We'd like to thank you in advance for donating to support the charitable programs and services offered by Floris UMC. We rely on the generosity of people like you to provide assistance to those in need. May God bless your generosity.
We also have opportunities for giving during Advent and Easter. If you are interested in these opportunities, please sign up for our e-communications or check back during Christmas and Easter.
