Dear Floris Family,

Many of you have shared your appreciation for issues raised in our recent Sustaining Relationships sermon series. Today I am asking you for a favor: submit questions or topics that you would like us to address during our panel discussion this Sunday. On occasion we offer time to address specific questions or issues you would like the pastors to discuss during worship. That will happen this week at each service.

It has been great to see so many of you engaging in learning opportunities at Floris in the past few weeks. More than 200 Floris members attended Tuesday night’s presentation on the Old Testament by Dr. Bruce Birch of Wesley Seminary. More than 80 persons attended the marriage conference last weekend. Coupled with sign ups for the upcoming Lenten study, it is easy to see a real spiritual hunger in our church. I applaud how seriously you prioritize your life in Christ in so many ways. Read below about a great way to expand your prayer and devotional life at the 5 Talent Academy that is being held at Floris on Saturday, February 23. This event is open to everyone and will feature an insightful speaker that will help you grow deeper in your life in Christ.

Lenten Study – Participant Journals Now Available
The Participant Journals for our upcoming Lenten series will be available for sale this Sunday in the Gathering Space and are also available during business hours in the church office. The cost is $8. There are many new small groups starting during Lent and I encourage you to join one. Small group sign-ups continue this Sunday in the Gathering Space and online as well. The study begins February 10. Visit Floris’ website for more information about the study, 6 Decisions That Will Change Your Life, including how to sign up for a small group or download the electronic version of the Participant Journal. Contact Bill Graywith questions.

5 Talent Academy Returns to Floris
On Saturday, February 23, Floris UMC will once again host a live streaming event for the Virginia Annual Conference. Developing a deeper devotional life will be the focus of this event. Keynote speaker Mindy Caliguire, founder of Soul Care and author of “Soul Care Resources” will share practical ways you can develop a deeper and stronger spirituality. Bishop Young Jin Cho will share his testimony related to a vital prayer life and his challenge for us to take up this important practice. You want to attend this event. Registration deadline is February 13. Find out more information or register for the 5 Talent Academy. Contact Cynthia Lopynskiwith questions.

ReelAbilities Film Festival
One reason I enjoy movies is that they provide an opportunity to observe and learn about someone else’s life in a way that brings new insight and understanding. On Sunday, February 10, at 6:30 PM, we will offer “Ocean Heaven”, a film about a father’s efforts to teach his son, who has autism, the life skills necessary to survive on his own. Floris is partnering with other local churches and community agencies in the upcoming “ReelAbilities” Greater DC Disabilities Film Festival. ReelAbilities is the largest film festival in the country dedicated to promoting awareness and appreciation of the lives of people with disabilities. Join us and bring a friend. Contact Allan Ballenger for more information.

Parking Shuttle This Sunday
The Floris parking shuttle from the Network Solutions/XO Communications parking lot will be available before and after the 11 AM service this Sunday since we may have larger attendance at this service. When you park offsite you make Floris a welcoming place for everyone, members and guests alike. The 5 PM service will end at 6 PM so that you will have plenty of time to gather with family and friends for the Super Bowl.

Chocolate Festival Almost Here
You can help hungry kids in our area by participating in Floris’ annual Chocolate Festival on February 9. There are still opportunities to get involved. Visit our website to donate to the silent auction or volunteer the day of the festival. This is a great event for the entire family and your neighbors and friends. I look forward to seeing you there.

Panel Discussion this Sunday
You will make this week’s sermon a success when you submit your questions about relationships today. We will also have a way for you to submit questions from your cell phones during the worship service. We hope you can join us. Scripture: Psalm 19:1-9.

In Christ,
– Tom
