Last week I attended the Virginia Annual Conference along with our other clergy and lay delegates. This was a voting year to choose our General Conferencedelegates. I was elected the first clergy delegate, which means that I will lead Virginia’s 26 delegates to General Conference and 52 delegates to Jurisdictional Conference along with the first elected lay delegate. I am very honored by my fellow clergy for this election and will be working to prepare the delegation for this important meeting. General Conference is the world-wide meeting of the United Methodist Church that will convene in April, 2012 in Tampa, Florida. There are numerous important issues before the church at this time. In the months ahead I will hold some workshops for those of you interested in knowing more about topics coming before our General Conference.
I will be leaving Sunday on the Student Ministry mission trip to Costa Rica. I am excited to be a part of the 44 students and adults going on this trip. This is a great chance for me to get to know some of the young men and women who participate in our student ministry. I have found that if you want to get to know people and experience Christian community, there is nothing like a mission trip. My daughter Hannah is taking this trip. She will be a senior next year and I am looking forward to spending this time with her. Be sure to follow the team on the Floris blogwhile we are there.
Haiti Mission Trips at Floris
Floris has committed to sending teams to Haiti for three years to assist in the rebuilding process there after last year’s devastating earthquake. We are sending a December teamto Haiti and are currently recruiting volunteers to be a part of this ministry. Volunteers from the team that went to Haiti in March will be available Sunday at the Connection Desk to answer questions you may have about our upcoming Haiti mission trips and applications will also be available. Charlie Kendall, a member of our March team, made a video of their experience; you can view it here. This video is very well done and will give you a clear understanding of the hard work that is being done to rebuild churches, schools and medical clinics operated by the Methodist Church in Haiti. Take time to watch this, it will be well worth your time.
New Floris UMC Blog
Floris now has an official blog at blog.florisumc.org. The blog will feature ministry updates, sermon reflections and stories of how God is working in the Floris Community. If you would like to share how you have seen God through your involvement at Floris on the blog, contact Susan Ward. Links to all of Floris’ ministry and mission blogs may be found here.
Yesterday we sent you a communications survey. I want to encourage you to take a few minutes to complete this survey. The information you provide is important to us as we strive to consider the best ways to communicate Floris’ news, events and activities to you. Thank you for your valuable input.
This Week in Worship
Although we are not a people who believe in slavery the truth is we all struggle with captivity. We are captive to fear, to expectations and to dependence on the things of this world. This week in worship we will be exploring what Paul meant when he said, “Where the spirit of the Lord is there is freedom.” (2 Corinthians 3:17) Come join us and discover what bold hope can be found in the spirit of the Lord. Scripture: 2 Corinthians 3:12-18.
