Exploring the Social Principles: Faith in Action

The Social Principles of The United Methodist Church represent more than a statement of beliefs — they are where faith meets the realities of the world. They embody “our journey toward living fully into God’s gracious love for the world,” offering a thoughtful framework for how we live out our discipleship in public life.

This special series will be led by Rev. Rob Vaughn, Ph.D., who brings deep expertise and firsthand experience with the Social Principles. From 2016–2024, Rev. Vaughn served on the General Board of Church & Society during the time the revised Social Principles were created. He helped interpret them not only in the U.S. but also in three annual conferences in the Democratic Republic of Congo in preparation for General Conference 2024. At that conference, he served as vice-chair of the legislative committee on “The Social Community”, guiding key discussions and related resolutions. In addition, Rev. Vaughn serves as adjunct faculty at Wesley Theological Seminary, teaching in the Doctor of Ministry program.

Drawing on this rich background, Rev. Vaughn will help participants explore how the Social Principles inform our church’s stance on pressing public issues and provide a platform for pursuing social justice. Together, we will reflect on:

  • How do the Social Principles shape the witness of our church today?
  • In what ways do they call us to take action as individuals and as a community?
  • How can these guiding statements provide hope and direction in a divided world?

Whether you are new to The United Methodist Church or have been part of the community for years, this event offers an opportunity to deepen your understanding of how our faith connects with daily life and global concerns.

The Social Principles are more than words on a page — they are a call to action, a vision for justice, and a reminder that faith is always lived out in relationship with the world around us.
