SUMMARY:Yoon Nam - Prayer Garden
DESCRIPTION:Experience Art that Connects Faith\, Creativity\, and Community with Yoon Nam’s Prayer Garden Exhibit\nThe Floris Art Gallery invites you to experience this month’s featured collection – Yoon Nam’s Prayer Garden – a heartfelt exploration of faith and creativity born out of unexpected beginnings. \nDuring the pandemic\, many of us searched for new ways to find peace and purpose in uncertain times. For this month’s artist\, that journey began with simple YouTube tutorials and a paintbrush. What started as a pastime soon transformed into a spiritual practice—a way of slowing down\, listening\, and becoming more aware of God’s presence in the quiet moments of each day. \nThough not formally trained\, the artist discovered that painting could be more than just creating images on canvas. Each brushstroke became both a prayer and a reflection\, offering gratitude for the gift of life. Through this practice\, a deeper way of seeing the world emerged—one that celebrates simplicity\, beauty\, and stillness. \nThe collection features scenes of nature—trees reaching toward the sky\, flowers bursting with color\, waterscapes reflecting peace\, and skies alive with light. These works are not simply depictions of creation but invitations to experience it anew. They remind us that God’s beauty is always present—in the ordinary\, in the quiet\, and in the wonder we often overlook. \nWhen you visit the Floris Art Gallery this month\, you’ll encounter more than artwork on the walls. You’ll step into a space where faith and creativity meet\, where each piece is an offering of hope\, gratitude\, and awe. Whether you are an art enthusiast\, a seeker of spiritual reflection\, or simply someone who longs for a moment of stillness\, this exhibition offers a place to pause\, breathe\, and be renewed. \nLearn more about this month’s exhibition on our Art Gallery page. \nThe Floris Art Gallery also welcomes artists in our community to share their gifts. If you are interested in submitting your own work for consideration\, we invite you to apply to exhibit with us. \nCome and experience art that draws you closer to God\, to creation\, and to community.

SUMMARY:The Social Principles
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the Social Principles: Faith in Action\nThe Social Principles of The United Methodist Church represent more than a statement of beliefs — they are where faith meets the realities of the world. They embody “our journey toward living fully into God’s gracious love for the world\,” offering a thoughtful framework for how we live out our discipleship in public life. \nThis special series will be led by Rev. Rob Vaughn\, Ph.D.\, who brings deep expertise and firsthand experience with the Social Principles. From 2016–2024\, Rev. Vaughn served on the General Board of Church & Society during the time the revised Social Principles were created. He helped interpret them not only in the U.S. but also in three annual conferences in the Democratic Republic of Congo in preparation for General Conference 2024. At that conference\, he served as vice-chair of the legislative committee on “The Social Community”\, guiding key discussions and related resolutions. In addition\, Rev. Vaughn serves as adjunct faculty at Wesley Theological Seminary\, teaching in the Doctor of Ministry program. \nDrawing on this rich background\, Rev. Vaughn will help participants explore how the Social Principles inform our church’s stance on pressing public issues and provide a platform for pursuing social justice. Together\, we will reflect on: \n\nHow do the Social Principles shape the witness of our church today?\nIn what ways do they call us to take action as individuals and as a community?\nHow can these guiding statements provide hope and direction in a divided world?\n\nWhether you are new to The United Methodist Church or have been part of the community for years\, this event offers an opportunity to deepen your understanding of how our faith connects with daily life and global concerns. \nThe Social Principles are more than words on a page — they are a call to action\, a vision for justice\, and a reminder that faith is always lived out in relationship with the world around us. \nEvent Information \n\nClass 1: Sunday\, October 5 | 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM\nClass 2: Sunday\, October 19 | 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM\nClass 3: Sunday\, November 9 | 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM\n\nRegistration is required. Reserve your spot today to be part of this important conversation with Rev. Vaughn. \nRegister Now >

SUMMARY:Homes for All VOICE Assembly
DESCRIPTION:Homes for All VOICE AssemblySunday\, October 19 | 3:30–5:00 PM | Herndon\, VA \nJoin faith leaders\, nonprofits\, business partners\, and elected officials from across the region for the VOICE Homes for All Assembly\, a powerful gathering advocating for solutions to Virginia’s growing housing crisis. \nVirginia is facing a statewide shortage of affordable housing\, with families and neighbors struggling to keep up with rising rents and utility costs. Across the state\, faith institutions collectively own more than 74\,000 acres—nearly twice the size of Richmond. While many faith groups have tried to develop housing\, local rezoning processes are often lengthy\, costly\, and unpredictable\, making it difficult to put this land to work for the community. \nThe VOICE Assembly is part of a movement urging the General Assembly to support state reforms that streamline zoning for faith communities and tax-exempt organizations\, helping unlock land for affordable housing while maintaining environmental protections. \nThis interfaith gathering will include Christian\, Muslim\, Jewish\, Hindu\, and Sikh leaders\, along with nonprofit and business partners\, and elected officials. Both Virginia gubernatorial candidates have been invited to participate. Together\, attendees will call for bold\, bipartisan action to reduce barriers to housing\, strengthen communities\, and support the mission of congregations across the state. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to show support for housing solutions in Virginia. Reserve your spot today and be part of a powerful statewide movement. \nTogether\, we can take meaningful steps toward a Virginia where everyone has a safe\, affordable place to call home. \nWant to do more? We’re also looking ofr volunteers to help with parking and hospitality at the event. If you’re available to lend a hand\, please sign up for a volunteer slot here. Your support helps make this gathering welcoming and successful for all!
