Dear Floris Family,

One of the great gifts the church has offered to the world is in the arena of the arts. Music, sculpture, poetry, paintings, dance and other art forms were used by the church to allow people to express their love of God, experience of the faith and communicate the meaning of Biblical stories and events. This Sunday we will open an art exhibit provided by members and friends of Floris UMC on the theme:Faith Journey. This Lent we have been exploring the journey of faith. Take a moment to see how others express their walk with God in paintings, drawings and photographs. The exhibit is located in the elevator lobby of the second floor outside of the Hangar.

Last week I mentioned two mission teams. The UMVIM team to Haiti just returned this weekend. I want you to see this videomade by Jeremy Montes about their experiences. A team is still in Sierra Leone and you may also follow what they are doing by reading their blog posts.

Sunday’s Shuttle Schedule
I want to thank those of you who are using the shuttle.Because of your efforts, there have been spaces available on busy Sundays. An empty space sends a powerful message to our first time guests as they enter our parking lot. They know “there’s room for me here”. More importantly, those empty spots communicate that we were expecting them.Parking offsite is one simple way to share God’s love by welcoming others into the Floris community and I am grateful for your willingness to offer that gift. We will continue to offer shuttles from the Network Solutions/XO Communications parking lotbeginning at 8:45 AM until the last person leaves from the 11 AM service.

Easter Basket Return is Sunday
There are a few opportunities remaining to deliver Easter baskets to local shelters and organizations. If you have a van or SUV and some free time this week, please consider assisting with this program. Contact Jake McGlothinto find out how to participate. If you picked up a basket tag, please bring your filled Easter basket back by 1 PM this Sunday.

Alpha Course
If you feel you have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith or you’d like to have your questions answered about the existence of God and the purpose of life, Alpha Course is a great place to start. Alpha is an eight-week course where a different aspect of the Christian faith will be studied each week. It begins April 10 and includes a meal or refreshments each week. The emphasis of the group is exploration and discovery in a relaxed and informal environment. Sign up for Alpha Course.

Empty Bowls Returns to Floris
Tickets for the Empty Bowlsevent, here at Floris on April 12, will be on sale in the Gathering Space on Sunday. Proceeds go directly to Food for Others, the largest distributor of free food to those facing food emergencies in Northern Virginia. Empty Bowls is presented by the Giving Circle of Hope and this is the 2nd year Floris has hosted this event. For every $1 donation, Food for Others can collect and distribute food for four meals.

This Week in Worship
We can’t do everything on our own. Despite our best efforts, we will fail if we try to follow Christ without surrendering our will to him. In our reading of John 10 this week, Jesus refers to himself as “The Good Shepherd” who protects his sheep and leads them. We must continuously surrender to God’s will, no matter where we are being led. Come join me for “The Decision to Surrender”. Scripture:John 10:1-6, 14-18.

In Christ,
– Tom
