A Show of Quilts

What brings a group of quilters together? What keeps them together through the years? In our case, it was a mutual love of exploration and creation. The Golden Stitches have been quilting together for nearly two decades. First, we leaned toward traditional, hand-quilted pieces that reflected our traditional sewing backgrounds. Over time, as we sought out new horizons to explore, our vision and techniques evolved.

Always looking for new avenues for growth, some of the local quilt challenges in our area drew us to them:

• multiple Inspired By challenges from Donna DeSoto
• the Fly Me to the Moon, Herstory, and Ourstory challenges from Susanne Miller Jones
• the semi-annual challenge provided by the Sacred Threads exhibit

When Covid hit, we missed these opportunities so much that we created our own. Alphonse Mucha’s Claire de Lune inspired our Moon series. Gustav Klimt’s art inspired our series depicting his work celebrating women and family. Designer and artist Lauren Burch’s Self Portrait 1999 provided the impetus for our trio of Soul Sisters, a group “trade around” challenges.

Our quilts have been shown around the US, in France and Australia. They have been in the chambers of the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. They have also appeared in international quilting publications.

Our sisterhood of finding art in fabric, pattern, color, style and fine workmanship inspires our minds and feeds our souls.
