Volunteer with Students

Volunteer Opportunities

Student Ministries leaders have an ambitious vision. We want to welcome every student who walks through our doors and let them know they are supported and encouraged. That can only happen when students have the opportunity to develop close relationships with caring, committed adults. To achieve this, we keep our adult-to-student ratio low. This year our goal is 5:1!

If you’d like to get involved in Student Ministries, review the opportunities below to find where you fit in. Then, contact Pepe Miller at pmiller@florisumc.org for Middle School or Kara Stuebing at kstuebing@florisumc.org for High School.

Job Description: Leaders intentionally develop relationships with students in both large and small group settings in order to see God bring transformational change. This can take place while playing games, crafting, praying together, having conversations and other fellowship outings.

In addition to being paired with other leaders to facilitate small group breakouts after the main teaching session, leaders are asked to assist with one or more of these roles:

  • Welcome students and check them in using iPad or newcomer cards
  • Serve food and refreshments
  • Participate in group activities and worship

Time Commitment: A full school year (Sept – June) for about 2.5 hours weekly, including preparation time.

  • Must also attend leader training sessions, about four each year
  • Encouraged to participate in fall/spring retreats
  • Connect with students’ parents on occasion

Requirements:

  • Take and pass an online one hour course on child safety
  • Pass a background check

Job Description: Leaders intentionally develop relationships with students in both large and small group settings in order to see God bring transformational change.

Leaders will be paired together to help lead and facilitate a life group. Topics for life groups can be based on feedback from the students, current events, the current sermon series, topics the leaders believe is important or valuable, or curriculum provided by Student Ministries. Life groups can also include meals, time for study and homework, and occasional special events.

In addition to building community, another goal should be to start conversations on how their faith and relationship in God intersects with their everyday realities using Scripture, personal stories and other resources.
